The 11 remaining competitors in Rockstar: Georgian Bay got some professional help from singer-songwriter Wil during a private clinic at Georgian Bay Secondary School (GBSS) Friday.
The clinic was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Meaford and was designed to help contestants to prepare for the next round of the competition, which will be held on Friday, April 28. Speaking from personal experience, Wil touched on a variety of topics ranging from coping with nerves to accepting constructive criticism to improve performances, but warned the young musicians to take it only from people they can trust.
"Be careful who you take advice from," said Wil, who has been performing for over 15 years and has played concerts with such artists as Feist and Kevin Drew from Broken Social Scene. "Some people may just tell you what you want to hear."
Throughout the clinic, Wil repeatedly warned the students about the dangers of arrogance and how detrimental it can be to a performance.
"When you think you're the best everyone can tell and when you're playing through a system it amplifies emotions and it amplifies your arrogance," said Wil. "You're not the raddest at what you do. Look at everyone who does what you do better and learn from them."
The clinic also featured performances from Wil and Rockstar competitor Chelsea Randall.
"If you're watching that and thinking you'll never be that good," said Wil after Randall recapped her first-round performance of Hallelujah. "Just remember, the Ramones were one of the greatest bands in the history of music. I won't say any more than that."
Following the clinic, Wil played an intimate evening concert at McGuinty's Café for an appreciative audience, featuring songs from his latest album, By December. At one point in the show, Wil mentioned how much he appreciated the opportunity to speak at the school and praised parents in the community for raising such good students, the exact opposite of himself, he said joking about his own academic career.
Rockstar: Georgian Bay Round 3 will take place at 7:00 in the GBSS cafeteria on Friday where the final 11 will be putting the professional advice to practice and playing at the top of their games for a coveted spot in the top 6 for May.
