Sort out roles of government

I agree that all governments have to address the deficit in Canada’s infrastructure that “is in a state of near collapse.”

Your editorial listed several options to fund this deficit but there is one key step that you failed to mention.

It is imperative that the three levels of government sort out their roles. I believe that municipalities fall under the umbrella of the provincial government so the primary responsibility for infrastructure lies with the McGuinty government. Just because the feds now have money in the bank doesn’t mean that Ottawa should assume this primary responsibility.

If Ontario and the other provinces feel there is an important role for the federal government on an ongoing basis then get agreement to change the roles and funding first.

As a guiding principle, we should expect as taxpayers that responsibility comes with accountability. It’s so convenient that Ottawa assume the role of a “banker” and the provinces and municipalities to act as the “spenders”.

To date there has been a weak response from the McGuinty government “it’s all the fed’s problem.”

No, Mr. McGuinty, under the existing rules, it’s your problem, your responsibility. What about the option for the province to move into the tax room vacated by Ottawa? What about raising additional funds for infrastructure by harmonizing the GST and PST?
