Joe Mercer

Rocky makes his comeback today in theatres - true he may need a dose of Gerital and a walker - but he is back, and mumbling like he never left. And with Rocky Balboa's unexpected (and perhaps unneeded) return 16 years since he and Tommy Gunn beat the tar out of each other in the street, I thought I would take a look at some of the best and worst Hollywood sequels.

THE BEST

Star Wars Episode V:

The Empire Strikes Back

Personally, my favourite of the six Star Wars movies, Empire is the perfect sequel. Star Wars geeks everywhere, present company included, have had the Empire versus Jedi argument and will continue to have it until Lucas manages to make a decent franchise addition.

Aliens

Take a great movie (Alien), give James Cameron a huge budget to build the sequel, a script full of marines with wicked machineguns and what do you get? One freakishly cool movie. It's better than the original and set the bar so high the movies that followed were disappointing to say the least.

Return of the King

Epic in every sense of the word, Return of the King ends Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy with a bang heard around the world. Makes the marathon of the trilogy worth it. Two Towers is almost as good and also deserves a nod.

Spider-Man 2

As much as I liked the original, Spider-Man 2 takes everything Sam Raimi accomplished in the first film and multiplies it beyond expectations. Best comic book movie ever.

THE WORST

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Okay, it's technically a prequel, but The Menace is just plain bad. It's beyond Jar-Jar bad - and unfortunately, it was just the first of three bad Star Wars prequels.

Jaws 4: The Revenge

Do you even need to go past the tagline of this film? This Time ... It's Personal. It should have read: This Time ... We Just Want Your Money. But hey, if you're a Mario Van Peebles fan, this movie is for you.

The Next Karate Kid

Really? Even Ralph Macchio didn't want to be in this movie ... Ralph Macchio.

Conan the Destroyer

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wilt Chamberlain and Grace Jones ... hmmmm, sounds like an Oscar to me!

Speed 2: Cruise Control

I bet Sandra Bullock wished the bus crashed in the first film, taking this idea with her.

Batman & Robin

Where to start? Nipples on the bat suit, Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze or Chris O'Donnell? There's just so much bad going on here.
