Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings will rock Casino Rama on Aug. 17 to raise funds for the Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre.

Canadian classic-rock icons will light up the stage at Casino Rama’s entertainment centre to drum up funds for a high-tech tool that can be used to tackle cancer.
Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings headline the Aug. 17 “Radio for Radiology” benefit concert, supported by opening act Lighthouse and sponsored by 104.1 The Dock.
Proceeds from the event will fund the purchase of an interventional radiology machine for the Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre.
“Everyone has come together to help with this benefit concert,” said Paul Larche, president of Larche Communications Inc. and owner of The Dock and KICX 106.
Bachman and Cummings are donating a portion of their fee to the cause, while the casino has offered its entertainment centre at no cost.
Metroland North Media, publisher of the Barrie Advance, the Orillia Today and the Midland Mirror, among other newspapers, is donating print space to advertise the event.
The radio station is organizing, underwriting and promoting the concert at no charge.
“A sell out of this show could raise well over $100,000 for the Radio for Radiology Campaign,” Larche added.
The radiology machine allows doctors to perform a range of diagnostic and surgical procedures, including the delivery of high concentrations of chemotherapy directly into a tumour without exposing the rest of the body to the drug’s effects.
This specialized procedure cuts off blood supply to the tumour, depriving it of oxygen and nutrients, and trapping the drugs at the tumour site.
In another treatment, a needle electrode eliminates the tumour through heat generated by radiofrequency energy.
Simcoe County is currently home to just one of the units, located at Royal Victoria Hospital, and cannot meet demand.
“Here is an opportunity to enjoy legendary Canadian rockers Bachman Cummings, along with opening act Lighthouse, and help raise money for the new Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre at the same time,” Larche added.
Bachman and Cummings boast a string of hits, both from their time together as members of the Guess Who and as solo artists.
Audience favourites include American Woman, These Eyes, Laughing, No Sugar Tonight, Stand Tall, and Takin’ Care of Business.
Lighthouse, with its lively mix of rock, jazz and classical influences, boasts four Juno Awards and multiple hits, including Sunny Days, Hats Off to a Stranger, One Fine Morning, and 1849.
