The Huronia Stallions Varsity Football Team lost 34-20 to the Pickering Dolphins in the Ontario Varsity Football League quarter-finals.
The Stallions were hurting early, after key injuries to Matt Cross and Craig Blenkhorn. Allan Baxter was injured the week before and was out of the game.
The Stallions fell behind 28-6 at halftime. In the second half, a costly fumbled punt on the one-yard line led the Dolphins increasing their lead to 34-6. The Stallions began the comeback as quarterback Kyle Graves led two fourth-quarter scoring drives, as Brett Haenni and Mike Rostance each caught touchdown passes.
The Stallion defense buckled down in the second half and did not yield any points down the stretch.
However, the push was too little, too late. With a minute and 35 seconds remaining, the lights literally went out on the Stallions' season. The lights at Pickering's field shut off and after an hour delay, the game was ended. The Stallion staff conceded defeat rather than return at a later date to complete the final moments of the game.
Brett Haenni had 13 carries for 119 yards while Kyle Graves completed 13 passes in 26 attempts for 119 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions. Graves also had grabbed an interception on defense. Taylor Shadgett led the defensive corps with eight tackles.
Graduating players include Craig Blenkhorn, Tom McMahon, Tyler Honeywood, Dan Harvey, Brett Haenni, Mike Rostance, Taylor Shadgett, Alexander Kent, Courtney Lewis and Colin Carswell. Overall the Stallions had a very successful season, posting a 6-2 record for the third year in a row.
Highlights included tough victories over Metro Toronto in the playoffs and a win over a very good Brampton Bulldogs team. The Huronia Stallions Peewee squad defeated the Hamilton Steelers 20-8 in the SCOFL semifinals.
The victory advances the team to the league finals, scheduled for Aug. 9 at 10:45 a.m. against the Burlington Stampeders at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton.
