Crews work to repair the punctured gas line Monday morning

A punctured gas line in west Orillia led to the closure of two roads and the evacuation of several homes in an emerging subdivision Monday morning.

Fire officials say a crew severed a four-inch gas main while digging on a property under development at the intersection of Atlantis Drive and Bass Lake Sideroad.

Both roads were closed and several homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Workers were also moved from the area while Union Gas repaired the severed pipe, said Capt. Roger King, of the Orillia Fire Department.

“They had to come in and crimp off both ends where the gas leak was,” he said. “They were pretty quick.”

The roads were reopened soon after.
