A 21-year-old man suffered non-life threatening injuries after being thrown from this vehicle. Police say a chase began after they received a call for assistance from an Orillia gas station early Saturday morning. The incident will be investigated by the SIU.

Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in to probe the circumstances of a police chase that ended in a crash outside of Beaverton early Saturday morning.

According to a press release from the SIU – a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injury and deaths involving the police – the crash stemmed from a disturbance call from an Orillia gas station around 2:30 a.m.

Officers from the Orillia detachment of the OPP responded to the call and a man fled the scene.

Officers pursued the vehicle, which headed south down the highway.

Just metres south of Mara Road, the 21-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle, which left the road and rolled several times.

The driver was thrown from the vehicle and suffered non-life threatening injuries. He was treated at Orillia’s Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital.

The crash, and subsequent investigation, closed the highway from Mara Road to Concession 7 Thorah until after 12 p.m.

The SIU has assigned six investigators to the case and is asking any witnesses to the incident to call 1-800-787-8529, ext. 2290.
